Becoming A Book Worm…

Ayyyeeee!!!!! I’m so excited…. ^^ I’m about to finish working on my mini-library at home, and I can’t wait to see it finished. :) :) :) Well, I am very thankful coz, since I finally have more time for myself, I can now relax and relieve my stress through reading a lot of books. Books are very powerful , you know. They can take you to a journey that you haven’t been gone to, and it’s like you, yourself serves as the primary character for each stories. It’s a wonderful habit. I mean I really enjoy being surrounded of such beautiful things like books and now, I can say that I am positively charged of some unreasonable point. (Ano daw?) hehe :) Oh, btw. May I recommend… if you’re in to politics or some sort of lawyer-government business I would suggest that you read books of John Grisham. He’s a good writer of such and you’ll learn a lot especially about the turn around of the US government. I just finished reading one of his books; “The Firm” and currently reading “The Testament” written on his behalf. Before, when I was a leader, It was my honest habit collecting spiritual and leadership books so that I may enhance leadership skills God gave me. However it turned out to be a negligence coz I didn’t have time to read those books due to “all-church/ministry life” I mean I was too busy doing some stuff and all in the church and instead of having my spirituality raise it’s level it turned down unexpectedly. And so, my poor books were left sitting in my drawers like neglected trash and all. But now, everything’s changed. Everything is in it’s place.

Enough of the emotional crap, here, let me share you one good book I have done reading by John Grisham. “The Firm” (here’s an excerpt)

at the top of his class at Harvard Law, he had his choice of the best in America. He made a deadly mistake. When Mitch McDeere signed on with Bendini, Lambert & Locke of Memphis, he thought he and his beautiful wife, Abby, were on their way. The firm leased him a BMW, paid off his school loans, arranged a mortgage and hired him a decorator. Mitch McDeere should have remembered what his brother Ray — doing fifteen years in a Tennessee jail — already knew. You never get nothing for nothing. Now the FBI has the lowdown on Mitch’s firm and needs his help. Mitch is caught between a rock and a hard place, with no choice — if he wants to live.

The Firm Excerpt

1

THE SENIOR PARTNER studied the résumé for the hundredth time and again found nothing he disliked about Mitchell Y. McDeere, at least not on paper. He had the brains, the ambition, the good looks. And he was hungry; with his background, he had to be. He was married, and that was mandatory. The firm had never hired an unmarried lawyer, and it frowned heavily on divorce, as well as womanizing and drinking. Drug testing was in the contract. He had a degree in accounting, passed the CPA exam the first time he took it and wanted to be a tax lawyer, which of course was a requirement with a tax firm. He was white, and the firm had never hired a black. They managed this by being secretive and clubbish and never soliciting job applications. Other firms solicited, and hired blacks. This firm recruited, and remained lily white. Plus, the firm was in Memphis, of all places, and the top blacks wanted New York or Washington or Chicago. McDeere was a male, and there were no women in the firm. That mistake had b
een made in the mid-seventies when they recruited the number one grad from Harvard, who happened to be a she and a wizard at taxation. She lasted four turbulent years and was killed in a car wreck.

He looked good, on paper. He was their top choice. In fact, for this year there were no other prospects. The list was very short. It was McDeere or no one.

The managing partner, Royce McKnight, studied a dossier labeled “Mitchell Y. McDeere–Harvard.” An inch thick with small print and a few photographs, it had been prepared by some ex-CIA agents in a private intelligence outfit in Bethesda. They were clients of the firm and each year did the investigating for no fee. It was easy work, they said, checking out unsuspecting law students. They learned, for instance, that he preferred to leave the Northeast, that he was holding three job offers, two in New York and one in Chicago, and that the highest offer was $76,000 and the lowest was $68,000. He was in demand. He had been given the opportunity to cheat on a securities exam during his second year. He declined, and made the highest grade in the class. Two months ago he had been offered cocaine at a law school party. He said no and left when everyone began snorting. He drank an occasional beer, but drinking was expensive and he had no money. He owed close to $23,000 in student loans. He was hungry.

Royce McKnight flipped through the dossier and smiled. McDeere was their man.

Lamar Quin was thirty-two and not yet a partner. He had been brought along to look young and act young and project a youthful image for Bendini, Lambert & Locke, which in fact was a young firm, since most of the partners retired in their late forties or early fifties with money to burn. He would make partner in this firm. With a six-figure income guaranteed for the rest of his life, Lamar could enjoy the twelve-hundred-dollar tailored suits that hung so comfortably from his tall, athletic frame. He strolled nonchalantly across the thousand-dollar-a-day suite and poured another cup of decaf. He checked his watch. He glanced at the two partners sitting at the small conference table near the windows.

Precisely at two-thirty someone knocked on the door. Lamar looked at the partners, who slid the résumé and dossier into an open briefcase. All three reached for their jackets. Lamar buttoned his top button and opened the door.

“Mitchell McDeere?” he asked with a huge smile and a hand thrust forward.

“Yes.” They shook hands violently.

“Nice to meet you, Mitchell. I’m Lamar Quin.”

“My pleasure. Please call me Mitch.” He stepped inside and quickly surveyed the spacious room.

“Sure, Mitch.” Lamar grabbed his shoulder and led him across the suite, where the partners introduced themselves. They were exceedingly warm and cordial. They offered him coffee, then water. They sat around a shiny mahogany conference table and exchanged pleasantries. McDeere unbuttoned his coat and crossed his legs. He was now a seasoned veteran in the search of employment, and he knew they wanted him. He relaxed. With three job offers from three of the most prestigious firms in the country, he did not need this interview, this firm. He could afford to be a little overconfident now. He was there out of curiosity. And he longed for warmer weather.

Oliver Lambert, the senior partner, leaned forward on his elbows and took control of the preliminary chitchat. He was glib and engaging with a mellow, almost professional baritone. At sixty-one, he was the grandfather of the firm and spent most of his time administering and balancing the enormous egos of some of the richest lawyers in the country. He was the counselor, the one the younger associates went to with their troubles. Mr. Lambert also handled the recruiting, and it was his mission to sign Mitchell Y. McDeere.

“Are you tired of interviewing?” asked Oliver Lambert.

“Not really. It’s part of it.”

Yes, yes, they all agreed. Seemed like yesterday they were interviewing and submitting résumés and scared to death they wouldn’t find a job and three years of sweat and torture would be down the drain. They knew what he was going through, all right.

“May I ask a question?” Mitch asked.

“Certainly.”

“Sure.”

“Anything.”

“Why are we interviewing in this hotel room? The other firms interview on campus through the placement office.”

“Good question.” They all nodded and looked at each other and agreed it was a good question.

“Perhaps I can answer that, Mitch,” said Royce McKnight, the managing partner. “You must understand our firm. We are different, and we take pride in that. We have forty-one lawyers, so we are small compared with other firms. We don’t hire too many people; about one every other year. We offer the highest salary and fringes in the country, and I’m not exaggerating. So we are very selective. We selected you. The letter you received last month was sent after we screened over two thousand third-year law students at the best schools. Only one letter was sent. We don’t advertise openings and we don’t solicit applications. We keep a low profile, and we do things differently. That’s our explanation.”

“Fair enough. What kind of firm is it?”

“Tax. Some securities, real estate and banking, but eighty percent is tax work. That’s why we wanted to meet you, Mitch. You have an incredibly strong tax background.”

“Why’d you go to Western Kentucky?” asked Oliver Lambert.

“Simple. They offered me a full scholarship to play football. Had it not been for that, college would’ve been impossible.”

“Tell us about your family.”

“Why is that important?”

“It’s very important to us, Mitch,” Royce McKnight said warmly.

They all say that, thought McDeere. “Okay, my father was killed in the coal mines when I was seven years old. My mother remarried and lives in Florida. I had two brothers. Rusty was killed in Vietnam. I have a brother named Ray McDeere.”

“Where is he?”

“I’m afraid that’s none of your business.” He stared at Royce McKnight and exposed a mammoth chip on his shoulder. The dossier said little about Ray.

“I’m sorry,” the managing partner said softly.

“Mitch, our firm is in Memphis,” Lamar said. “Does that bother you?”

“Not at all. I’m not fond of cold weather.”

“Have you ever been to Memphis?”

“No.”

“We’ll have you down soon. You’ll love it.”

Mitch smiled and nodded and played along. Were these guys serious? How could he consider such a small firm in such a small town when Wall Street was waiting?

“How are you ranked in your class?” Mr. Lambert asked.

“Top five.” Not top five percent, but top five. That was enough of an answer for all of them. Top five out of three hundred. He could have said number three, a fraction away from number two, and within striking distance of number one. But he didn’t. They came from inferior schools–Chicago, Columbia and Vanderbilt, as he recalled from a cursory examination of Martindale-Hubbell’s Legal Directory. He knew they would not dwell on academics.

“Why did you select Harvard?”

“Actually, Harvard selected me. I applied at several schools and was accepted everywhere. Harvard offered more financial assistance. I thought it was the best school. Still do.”

“You’ve done quite well here, Mitch,” Mr. Lambert said, admiring the résumé. The dossier was in the briefcase, under the table.

“Thank you. I’ve worked hard.”

“You made extremely high grades in your tax and securities courses.”

“That’s where my interest lies.”

“We’ve reviewed your writing sample, and it’s quite impressive.”

“Thank you. I enjoy research.”

They nodded and acknowledged this obvious lie. It was part of the ritual. No law student or lawyer in his right mind enjoyed research, yet, without fail, every prospective associate professed a deep love for the library.

“Tell us about your wife,” Royce McKnight said, almost meekly. They braced for another reprimand. But it was a standard, nonsacred area explored by every firm.

“Her name is Abby. She has a degree in elementary education from Western Kentucky. We graduated one week and got married the next. For the past three years she’s taught at a private kindergarten near Boston College.”

“And is the marriage–”

“We’re very happy. We’ve known each other since high school.”

“What position did you play?” asked Lamar, in the direction of less sensitive matters.

“Quarterback. I was heavily recruited until I messed up a knee in my last high school game. Everyone disappeared except Western Kentucky. I played off and on for four years, even started some as a junior, but the knee would never hold up.”

“How’d you make straight A’s and play football?”

“I put the books first.”

“I don’t imagine Western Kentucky is much of an academic school,” Lamar blurted with a stupid grin, and immediately wished he could take it back. Lambert and McKnight frowned and acknowledged the mistake.

“Sort of like Kansas State,” Mitch replied. They froze, all of them froze, and for a few seconds stared incredulously at each other. This guy McDeere knew Lamar Quin went to Kansas State. He had never met Lamar Quin and had no idea who would appear on behalf of the firm and conduct the interview. Yet, he knew. He had gone to Martindale-Hubbell’s and checked them out. He had read the biographical sketches of all of the forty-one lawyers in the firm, and in a split second he had recalled that Lamar Quin, just one of the forty-one, had gone to Kansas State. Damn, they were impressed.

“I guess that came out wrong,” Lamar apologized.

“No problem.” Mitch smiled warmly. It was forgotten.

Oliver Lambert cleared his throat and decided to get personal again. “Mitch, our firm frowns on drinking and chasing women. We’re not a bunch of Holy Rollers, but we put business ahead of everything. We keep low profiles and we work very hard. And we make plenty of money.”

“I can live with all that.”

“We reserve the right to test any member of the firm for drug use.”

“I don’t use drugs.”

“Good. What’s your religious affiliation?”

“Methodist.”

“Good. You’ll find a wide variety in our firm. Catholics, Baptists, Episcopalians. It’s really none of our business, but we like to know. We want stable families. Happy lawyers are productive lawyers. That’s why we ask these questions.”

Mitch smiled and nodded. He’d heard this before.

The three looked at each other, then at Mitch. This meant they had reached the point in the interview where the interviewee was supposed to ask one or two intelligent questions. Mitch recrossed his legs. Money, that was the big question, particularly how it compared to his other offers. If it isn’t enough, thought Mitch, then it was nice to meet you fellas. If the pay is attractive, then we can discuss families and marriages and football and churches. But, he knew, like all the other firms they had to shadowbox around the issue until things got awkward and it was apparent they had discussed everything in the world but money. So, hit them with a soft question first.

“What type of work will I do initially?”

They nodded and approved of the question. Lambert and McKnight looked at Lamar. This answer was his.

“We have something similar to a two-year apprenticeship, although we don’t call it that. We’ll send you all over the country to tax seminars. Your education is far from over. You’ll spend two weeks next winter in Washington at the American Tax Institute. We take great pride in our technical expertise, and the training is continual, for all of us. If you want to pursue a master’s in taxation, we’ll pay for it. As far as practicing law, it won’t be very exciting for the first two years. You’ll do a lot of research and generally boring stuff. But you’ll be paid handsomely.”

“How much?”

Lamar looked at Royce McKnight, who eyed Mitch and said, “We’ll discuss the compensation and other benefits when you come to Memphis.”

“I want a ballpark figure or I may not come to Memphis.” He smiled, arrogant but cordial. He spoke like a man with three job offers.

The partners smiled at each other, and Mr. Lambert spoke first. “Okay. A base salary of eighty thousand the first year, plus bonuses. Eighty-five the second year, plus bonuses. A low-interest mortgage so you can buy a home. Two country club memberships. And a new BMW. You pick the color, of course.”

They focused on his lips, and waited for the wrinkles to form on his cheeks and the teeth to break through. He tried to conceal a smile, but it was impossible. He chuckled.

“That’s incredible,” he mumbled. Eighty thousand in Memphis equaled a hundred and twenty thousand in New York. Did the man say BMW! His Mazda hatchback had a million miles on it and for the moment had to be jump-started while he saved for a rebuilt starter.

“Plus a few more fringes we’ll be glad to discuss in Memphis.”

Suddenly he had a strong desire to visit Memphis. Wasn’t it by the river?

The smile vanished and he regained his composure. He looked sternly, importantly at Oliver Lambert and said, as if he’d forgotten about the money and the home and the BMW, “Tell me about your firm.”

“Forty-one lawyers. Last year we earned more per lawyer than any firm our size or larger. That includes every big firm in the country. We take only rich clients–corporations, banks and wealthy people who pay our healthy fees and never complain. We’ve developed a specialty in international taxation, and it’s both exciting and very profitable. We deal only with people who can pay.”

“How long does it take to make partner?”

“On the average, ten years, and it’s a hard ten years. It’s not unusual for our partners to earn half a million a year, and most retire before they’re fifty. You’ve got to pay your dues, put in eighty-hour weeks, but it’s worth it when you make partner.”

Lamar leaned forward. “You don’t have to be a partner to earn six figures. I’ve been with the firm seven years, and went over a hundred thousand four years ago.”

Mitch thought about this for a second and figured by the time he was thirty he could be well over a hundred thousand, maybe close to two hundred thousand. At the age of thirty!

They watched him carefully and knew exactly what he was calculating.

“What’s an international tax firm doing in Memphis?” he asked.

That brought smiles. Mr. Lambert removed his reading glasses and twirled them. “Now that’s a good question. Mr. Bendini founded the firm in 1944. He had been a tax lawyer in Philadelphia and had picked up some wealthy clients in the South. He got a wild hair and landed in Memphis. For twenty-five years he hired nothing but tax lawyers, and the firm prospered nicely down there. None of us are from Memphis, but we have grown to love it. It’s a very pleasant old Southern town. By the way, Mr. Bendini died in 1970.”

“How many partners in the firm?”

“Twenty, active. We try to keep a ratio of one partner for each associate. That’s high for the industry, but we like it. Again, we do things differently.”

“All of our partners are multimillionaires by the age of forty-five,” Royce McKnight said.

“All of them?”

“Yes, sir. We don’t guarantee it, but if you join our firm, put in ten hard years, make partner and put in ten more years, and you’re not a millionaire at the age of forty-five, you’ll be the first in twenty years.”

“That’s an impressive statistic.”

“It’s an impressive firm, Mitch,” Oliver Lambert said, “and we’re very proud of it. We’re a close-knit fraternity. We’re small and we take care of each other. We don’t have the cutthroat competition the big firms are famous for. We’re very careful whom we hire, and our goal is for each new associate to become a partner as soon as possible. Toward that end we invest an enormous amount of time and money in ourselves, especially our new people. It is a rare, extremely rare occasion when a lawyer leaves our firm. It is simply unheard of. We go the extra mile to keep careers on track. We want our people happy. We think it is the most profitable way to operate.”

“I have another impressive statistic,” Mr. McKnight added. “Last year, for firms our size or larger, the average turnover rate among associates was twenty-eight percent. At Bendini, Lambert & Locke, it was zero. Year before, zero. It’s been a long time since a lawyer left our firm.”

They watched him carefully to make sure all of this sank in. Each term and each condition of the employment was important, but the permanence, the finality of his acceptance overshadowed all other items on the checklist. They explained as best they could, for now. Further explanation would come later.

Of course, they knew much more than they could talk about. For instance, his mother lived in a cheap trailer park in Panama City Beach, remarried to a retired truck driver with a violent drinking problem. They knew she had received $41,000 from the mine explosion, squandered most of it, then went crazy after her oldest son was killed in Vietnam. They knew he had been neglected, raised in poverty by his brother Ray (whom they could not find) and some sympathetic relatives. The poverty hurt, and they assumed, correctly, it had bred the intense desire to succeed. He had worked thirty hours a week at an all-night convenience store while playing football and making perfect grades. They knew he seldom slept. They knew he was hungry. He was their man.

“Would you like to come visit us?” asked Oliver Lambert.

“When?” asked Mitch, dreaming of a black 318i with a sunroof.

The ancient Mazda hatchback with three hubcaps and a badly cracked windshield hung in the gutter with its front wheels sideways, aiming at the curb, preventing a roll down the hill. Abby grabbed the door handle on the inside, yanked twice and opened the door. She inserted the key, pressed the clutch and turned the wheel. The Mazda began a slow roll. As it gained speed, she held her breath, released the clutch and bit her lip until the unmuffled rotary engine began whining.

With three job offers on the table, a new car was four months away. She could last. For three years they had endured poverty in a two-room student apartment on a campus covered with Porsches and little Mercedes convertibles. For the most part they had ignored the snubs from the classmates and coworkers in this bastion of East Coast snobbery. They were hillbillies from Kentucky, with few friends. But they had endured and succeeded quite nicely all to themselves.

She preferred Chicago to New York, even for a lower salary, largely because it was farther from Boston and closer to Kentucky. But Mitch remained noncommittal, characteristically weighing it all carefully and keeping most of it to himself. She had not been invited to visit New York and Chicago with her husband. And she was tired of guessing. She wanted an answer.

She parked illegally on the hill nearest the apartment and walked two blocks. Their unit was one of thirty in a two-story red-brick rectangle. Abby stood outside her door and fumbled through the purse looking for keys. Suddenly, the door jerked open. He grabbed her, yanked her inside the tiny apartment, threw her on the sofa and attacked her neck with his lips. She yelled and giggled as arms and legs thrashed about. They kissed, one of those long, wet, ten-minute embraces with groping and fondling and moaning, the kind they had enjoyed as teenagers when kissing was fun and mysterious and the ultimate.

“My goodness,” she said when they finished. “What’s the occasion?”

“Do you smell anything?” Mitch asked.

She looked away and sniffed. “Well, yes. What is it?”

“Chicken chow mein and egg foo yung. From Wong Boys.”

“Okay, what’s the occasion?”

“Plus an expensive bottle of Chablis. It’s even got a cork.”

“What have you done, Mitch?”

“Follow me.” On the small, painted kitchen table, among the legal pads and casebooks, sat a large bottle of wine and a sack of Chinese food. They shoved the law school paraphernalia aside and spread the food. Mitch opened the wine and filled two plastic wineglasses.

“I had a great interview today,” he said.

“Who?”

“Remember that firm in Memphis I received a letter from last month?”

“Yes. You weren’t too impressed.”

“That’s the one. I’m very impressed. It’s all tax work and the money looks good.”

“How good?”

He ceremoniously dipped chow mein from the container onto both plates, then ripped open the tiny packages of soy sauce. She waited for an answer. He opened another container and began dividing the egg foo yung. He sipped his wine and smacked his lips.

“How much?” she repeated.

“More than Chicago. More than Wall Street.”

She took a long, deliberate drink of wine and eyed him suspiciously. Her brown eyes narrowed and glowed. The eyebrows lowered and the forehead wrinkled. She waited.

“How much?”

“Eighty thousand, first year, plus bonuses. Eighty-five, second year, plus bonuses.” He said this nonchalantly while studying the celery bits in the chow mein.

“Eighty thousand,” she repeated.

“Eighty thousand, babe. Eighty thousand bucks in Memphis, Tennessee, is about the same as a hundred and twenty thousand bucks in New York.”

“Who wants New York?” she asked.

“Plus a low-interest mortgage loan.”

That word–mortgage–had not been uttered in the apartment in a long time. In fact, she could not, at the moment, recall the last discussion about a home or anything related to one. For months now it had been accepted that they would rent some place until some distant, unimaginable point in the future when they achieved affluence and would then qualify for a large mortgage.

She sat her glass of wine on the table and said matter-of-factly, “I didn’t hear that.”

“A low-interest mortgage loan. The firm loans enough money to buy a house. It’s very important to these guys that their associates look prosperous, so they give us the money at a much lower rate.”

“You mean as in a home, with grass around it and shrubs?”

“Yep. Not some overpriced apartment in Manhattan, but a three-bedroom house in the suburbs with a driveway and a two-car garage where we can park the BMW.”

The reaction was delayed by a second or two, but she finally said, “BMW? Whose BMW?”

“Ours, babe. Our BMW. The firm leases a new one and gives us the keys. It’s sort of like a signing bonus for a first-round draft pick. It’s worth another five thousand a year. We pick the color, of course. I think black would be nice. What do you think?”

“No more clunkers. No more leftovers. No more hand-me-downs,” she said as she slowly shook her head.

He crunched on a mouthful of noodles and smiled at her. She was dreaming, he could tell, probably of furniture, and wallpaper, and perhaps a pool before too long. And babies, little dark-eyed children with light brown hair.

“And there are some other benefits to be discussed later.”

“I don’t understand, Mitch. Why are they so generous?”

“I asked that question. They’re very selective, and they take a lot of pride in paying top dollar. They go for the best and don’t mind shelling out the bucks. Their turnover rate is zero. Plus, I think it costs more to entice the top people to Memphis.”

“It would be closer to home,” she said without looking at him.

“I don’t have a home. It would be closer to your parents, and that worries me.”

She deflected this, as she did most of his comments about her family. “You’d be closer to Ray.”

He nodded, bit into an egg roll and imagined her parents’ first visit, that sweet moment when they pulled into the driveway in their well-used Cadillac and stared in shock at the new French colonial with two new cars in the garage. They would burn with envy and wonder how the poor kid with no family and no status could afford all this at twenty-five and fresh out of law school. They would force painful smiles and comment on how nice everything was, and before long Mr. Sutherland would break down and ask how much the house cost and Mitch would tell him to mind his own business, and it would drive the old man crazy. They’d leave after a short visit and return to Kentucky, where all their friends would hear how great the daughter and the son-in-law were doing down in Memphis. Abby would be sorry they couldn’t get along but wouldn’t say much. From the start they had treated him like a leper. He was so unworthy they had boycotted the small wedding.

“Have you ever been to Memphis?” he asked.

“Once when I was a little girl. Some kind of convention for the church. All I remember is the river.”

“They want us to visit.”

“Us! You mean I’m invited?”

“Yes. They insist on you coming.”

“When?”

“Couple of weeks. They’ll fly us down Thursday afternoon for the weekend.”

“I like this firm already.”

There are a lot of books I caught my self reading since I’ve finished this one.  May I also include…

“The Testament” which talks about people who are fighting for their lives and how they reveal one secret from the testament.

I realize there’s a lot to be learned than when you are too locked up with some spiritual stuff. It’s a priority, however, Man! how are we to get good people from our society if you don’t explore such wonderful things?  :) :) :) Read the rest of this entry »

“The Heart of Worship”…Welcome 2010!

Current Mood: Blessed! :) :) :)

Song of the Day: Amazing Love (Hillsong Music)

Sharing: The Heart of Worship

Theme: God’s Grace is More Than Enough…

Hey Friends! How was your Holidays? I bet you really had a great time with your family, especially with a perfect and genuine time with God. :) So what’s up duck?! ahe ^^ I had a perfect Holiday Season. Especially New Year^^ And it’s really surprising that a new year with God’s new and beautiful grace has finally arrived.  :) I must say that I am truly grateful of our God, that another year has passed with His faithfulness and kindness. I can never believe and imagine that up until now, He is still the same God yesterday, today and forever until the end of age. He is the God of Ages! :) Okay, so I changed my layout, I prefer it simple but meaningful instead. I also apologize coz’ I’m not computer and techy savvy… So when I learn more I’ll upgrade and update more okies?! haha ! @_@ I just started blogging in between August-September of last year and I thank God coz He’s the God of knowledge and intelligence. But anyway my Christmas and New Year was great! I loved my Holiday Season. It was not that celebrative though, but God made me realize a lot of things and increased the level of my maturity. ajah! ^^,

Unlike others, I didn’t have so many gifts, but I must say that I am truly blessed for all the good things God has done in my life. (So many! that I can’t count with my fingers) God’s love is not always based on material things, but on how He is faithful in our lives.

Guess what? God eventually fixed my schedule. I have my piano lessons, ehem! hehe… and I also have time to go around malls and bookstores coz’ I’m currently collecting a lot of books for my mini-library at home. I always wanted a mini-library coz I really love to read and it refreshes my mind and relieves the stress in me. And not to forget! I also visit my doctors since I have a lot to work on my health and my fitness… time for a diet! :)  And if you’re a resident here in Pampanga or just nearby Angeles City if you want to consult medical help or check-up, consultations, I would recommend doctors from the AUFMC (Angeles University Foundation Medical Center). They are good doctors, and one of the best doctors here in the Philippines. (All of my doctors are from there.. :) ) Ahhh…anyway, God is good. Imagine, all of my medical consultations are free! :) (except from medications) I thank God coz since I work in Sutherland, Maxicare (my company health card) has helped me a lot to consult medical help and consultations. Imagine, I have a lot of things to work on my self, but all those consultations are free. It’s a sad thing coz I abused my health and I didn’t practically used the wisdom God gave me. I was too busy doing ministry stuff that I didn’t have time for my self and used my free consultation privileges. But God’s grace is there… :) I also have free dental checkup’s and treatments, etc! I’ll have my tooth removed, and I have free cleaning for my teeth. :) The only thing is that I wanted to have my teeth in braces however it’s not part of my health and dental insurance. But God is good! When I’ll have my tax refunds next month I’ll have them all braced. :)

- I give God the honor coz I when had and ECG, 2-D ECO and Stress test (Brace Protocol) for my cardiac problem, I didn’t pay for a 2,50o-3,000 php for conducting those series of tests. I took them all for free. Even for an upper abdominal ultrasound for my acidic problems, endoscope from an ENT (Ears, Nose Throat) doctor and for consulting a surgeon when I had an injury at my foot. Imagine, I took all those tests and medical consultations and I haven’t paid for anything except for my medications. What amazed me most is that after receiving the results, thank God they were all negative! :p

- Truly God is good. He wants us to be prosperous and victorious all the time. He has been so good to me, to my career and to my family for the year of 2009, and I know that he has wonderful things to do in my life for this year ahead. Even though I have so many set backs and failures, God turned them to blessings, favor and success. I also thank God because after a long time God has answered our prayers in the life of my father, for he is now in Canada. I believe God’s plan in our family is not just in a box, rather he wants to extend our territories as well. He attends Sunday services in JIL Saskatoon, Canada and he is counted as one of the active members there. And here’s the kick, after 2-3 years we will have the chance to live there as immigrants and Canadian citizens. HOW GREAT, HOW GREAT IS OUR GOD!. :)

- After a few months of being one of the bottom performers in my company, I am now counted as one of the top agents working in the account. God has helped me resolve my issues and my problems here at work, and they finally changed my schedule from night shift to morning shift. God has been so good to me. Everything that the enemy has destroyed in my life, God fixed them all. I realized a lot of things in my life. I overlooked a lot of important things that needs my attention and I focused myself too much on being so busy within the church and ministry stuff. Anyway, God is always a God of second chances. He loves to see us grow in the midst of rising problems and raging storms in life.

- For this year, I’m gonna pursue my studies. I’ll continue and take up BS Nursing and so that I can help my family with their needs and have my brother finish his studies and reach his dreams in life. Who knows? God is a god of suprises. We don’t know what God has in store for us for the coming years, and He might help me achieve my dream to be a successful Medical Doctor  someday. hehe! :)

Thank you so much! May God bless you more abundantly! :)

But let me share you the meaning of worship in my life during the year of 2009… Do you believe that genuine worship springs out from our trials and iniquities? Let’s go ahead and read, and find out how it manifested in my life. But before anything else, Lord… I offer this to you in giving glory, honor and power to your name. Praise the Lord! :)

Okay! hehe… so, Here we go…

“THE HEART OF WORSHIP”

I. The Heart of Worship is Abandon

- When I was a youth leader, a friend of mine gave me a booklet entitled “The Heart of Worship” which we bought from a Christian Bookstore. I learned a lot from that book, especially through the life of King David during his ministry days. At first, I didn’t know what means to abandon in terms of worshipping God but as I grew in faith I learned that to abandon is not an easy way to do. To abandon means; “to give up, to leave, FORSAKE, to yield and to surrender an act or an emotion”. There are a lot of simple ways to explain what abandon really means, however in terms of worship to abandon means a lot of things. I can say that abandon means; “The art of losing oneself in giving glory to God’s name”.

Let me share you then…

- From the day that I became a worship leader, It changed my life as well as my perspective when it comes to my ministry, my family and to personal and secular life. I learned that in worshipping God, you have to completely leave and unconsider these things and make God as the center of your worship. It’s pretty hard to do but that is the only way to do it! When worshipping God, sometimes we carry things and rather God being pleased, He is not being glorified. Before, when I worship God I worship Him because I have a ministry. I worship Him because I want to make my family whole. I worship Him because I want to make my life secure. Well, yes. That’s true! However worship is not about these things but about God alone who is worthy. David learned to abandon his kingdom, his kingship and his self when he worshipped God. He has unlocked one of the keys for a beautiful, perfect and genuine worship. How? When David worshipped God, he is not a “king” but as an ordinary shepherd, a person longing to serve, to please and to touch the heart of God. That is Abandon! You set aside yourself and you let God be magnified with your praise. :)

II. The Heart of Worship is Surrender

- If abandon is to leave and set aside things, to surrender is to lay down your life before God. “The core and the very heart of worship is knowing how to surrender oneself unto God that He may rule and sit at the throne of your heart!” Surrender is just a simple word. Yet, painful. Because when you surrender a thing it means you are removing your rights to it. Same as with worship. When we surrender our lives to God, we no longer take possession of it. One of my favorite books; “Extravagant Worship” by Darlene Zschech reveals how surrender means during the act of worship. She explains there that to be an extravagant worshipper, we need to get good in doing and saying; “I die daily“… means to surrender yourself everyday to God. Kathryn Khulman, one of the great women and mightily used by God paid a high price in giving genuine worship to God. “She died daily” (not literal) but she surrendered her self to Jesus everyday, just to fulfill the visions and the purpose made by God destined for her. And now, it came to pass.

- Surrender has a lot of price to pay but it is truly one of the keys of being an genuine and extravagant worshipper. When I became a believer, I thought that knowing Christ would suffice everything in my Christian life. I was wrong. Just like Ptr. Rick Warren said; “The more you become like Christ, the more fulfilled you will be”… And one of the keys on how to become like Christ is surrendering your life unto the heart of worship. :)

III. The Heart of Worship is Brokenness

- One of the most painful part of worship is being broken before God. It’s not always easy to do such thing, because it requires a lot of tears and sacrifices. There are times that when we worship we enjoy and be glad with the presence of our God. However in this part, God wants to enjoy our worship to see our hearts broken before his sight. For me, being broken is letting God crash your heart all the time, so that no sin, and pride may come in. It is also a sign that we only depend on God alone and not on ourselves. When I searched the word “brokenness” in my dictionary, I found one word that struck my heart. The word “Incomplete”. SO being broken means you are incomplete without the love of God. *Jesus completes me* I remember one verse in the bible which I do love and meditate now and then, and every time I have my daily devotion. In Psalm 51:17, it says;

“The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit;
a broken and contrite heart,
O God, you will not despise.”

David imaged a man of brokenness, even after his deadly sin he remained broken before God. It’s true. God loves brokenness. And he is pleased and glorified with a person full of which.

“An unbroken person cannot be trusted” - Gary Rosberg.

- Brokenness is a great sign of genuine humility and of servanthood.  You can never be a worshipper/ leader or even a servant of God if you are unbroken. God loves to use broken people. :)

“God will never plant the seed of His life upon a soil of a hard, unbroken spirit. He will only plant that seed where the conviction of the Holy Spirit has brought brokenness, where the soil has been watered with the tears of repentance as well as tears of joy”

- Alan Redpath

IV. The Heart of Worship is Obedience

- If brokenness is one painful act of worship, then Obedience it a heavyweight and a meaningful word for God. It is our primary, top basis on how far we love God and how deep our level on worship is. One of the great men of God (C.S. Lewis) said; “The proof of our love to God is how far we are willing to obey him”. Obedience must be 100%. There must be no reservations. One good example is Abraham, whom God commanded to sacrifice his own son. Imagine, he waited for his son Isaac for a long period of time. But when God asked him to offer his son’s life, he immediately followed God’s command. Obedience is a simple word, yet a difficult thing to do. Many worshippers fail in this part, because they find it hard to obey and still pursue on their own agenda. I believe Obedience is not as hard as we think it is. The only thing that makes it difficult is the resistance to do it, without even setting aside our selfish ways.

- Believe it or not, I was the worst worshipper ever. I sing, lead worship in front of many people but I disobey God all the time. I was known for being a leader, however I was the one who needs counselling and mentoring. We cannot be worshippers, leaders and servants of God if we don’t know how to obey. It brings out the character and attitude in us, and God will test us in these most of the time. No wonder why there is an “O” within the word “worship” it simply means Obedience to complete the whole part of it.

Remember! There are blessings from God after obedience as he has promised in Deuteronomy 28 and curses will follow if we don’t. So what wil you choose? blessings or curse? It’s our choice. :)

V. The Heart of Worship is Holiness

- 1 Peter 1:13-16;

Therefore, prepare your minds for action; be self-controlled ; set your hope fully on the grace to be given to you when Jesus Christ is revealed. As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had lived with ignorance. But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written; “Be holy, for I am holy”

- If there is one thing that God needs to be sensitive about is the word holiness. I must say that besides from obedience, from personal experience this is probably one of the most difficult, painful and sacrificial acts of worship. Holiness is not achievable, yet attainable. As long as we are here in this secular world, we cannot be holy like God however! we can attain holiness. We let God and the Holy Spirit be the center of our lives, so that we can avoid sin. Sin cannot be eliminated since it is the natural evil that satan had created into this world. However we can avoid it by the help of God. I love what Darlene Zschech said in her book “Extravagant Worship” she said; “An overcomer is the one who overcomes and resists the schemes and temptations of the enemy”. And to be an extravagant worshipper is to be a victorious overcomer of God. I fell and failed a lot of times in this aspect since I was overpowered by the enemy before. But by the grace and the power of God, I was set free.

- I learned that the more I become closer to God, the more sin is prone around me. The more God elevates my spiritual maturity, temptations became more intense. But because God’s hand is overprotecting me, I am able to overcome those things. I finally learned, that the true essence of being a worshipper is having a pure heart and a clean spirit.

Psalm 51

1 Have mercy on me, O God,
       according to your unfailing love;
       according to your great compassion
       blot out my transgressions.

2 Wash away all my iniquity
and cleanse me from my sin.

3 For I know my transgressions,
and my sin is always before me.

4 Against you, you only, have I sinned
and done what is evil in your sight,
so that you are proved right when you speak
       and justified when you judge.

5 Surely I was sinful at birth,
sinful from the time my mother conceived me.

 6 Surely you desire truth in the inner parts [a] ;
you teach [b] me wisdom in the inmost place.

 7 Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean;
wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.

 8 Let me hear joy and gladness;
let the bones you have crushed rejoice.

9 Hide your face from my sins
and blot out all my iniquity.

10 Create in me a pure heart, O God,
and renew a steadfast spirit within me.

11 Do not cast me from your presence
or take your Holy Spirit from me.

12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation
and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.

13 Then I will teach transgressors your ways,
and sinners will turn back to you.

14 Save me from bloodguilt, O God,
       the God who saves me,
and my tongue will sing of your righteousness.

15 O Lord, open my lips,
and my mouth will declare your praise.

 16 You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it;
you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings.

 17 The sacrifices of God are [c] a broken spirit;
       a broken and contrite heart,
O God, you will not despise.

 18 In your good pleasure make Zion prosper;
build up the walls of Jerusalem.

19 Then there will be righteous sacrifices,
       whole burnt offerings to delight you;
then bulls will be offered on your altar.

VI. The Heart of Worship is Giving

- If worship is giving reverence to God, then “giving” is bringing reverence to God. Giving is a beautiful act of worship. We glorify God’s name when we are entitled to giving, especially our tithes and offering. I, myself was not honoring God before because I give reservations. But one thing that God will not pour out his blessing is not giving what is due to Him. Singing praise and worship songs is not enough to prove our love to God. We can prove on how much we love God if we give. Giving him our time, devotion, our effort, sacrifices, etc!

- Giving is just very simple, but like what it says in Luke 16:10; “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much”.

VII. The Heart of Worship is more than a song… It’s all about Jesus!

- When I got a lot of promotions within the church, I lost the very heart of worship which is Jesus. I forgot that He is the only one who makes my world go round, not those positions, achievements, accomplishments and promotions. But when they were gone, I am coming back to the heart of worship. I don’t really care if I’ll be somebody within the ministry or not as long as I am someone in God’s heart. There were a lot of beautiful songs I sung during those days, then I thought those songs are enough to please the heart of God. But then, I was wrong. I was totally wrong. And based from my personal experience, I learned that “worship” can be a daily act and God’s move if we just know how to handle it. Because worship is not the excitement of our hearts in God’s presence but God’s excitement in the sincerity and devotion of our hearts.

- Many times, I failed and I fell along the way but what I learned is that God doesn’t count our failures and how many times we fell, but how much we are willing to fight for his agenda and how many times we rise and stand up in the midst of trials and obstacles.

I do hope and pray you had a great New Year guys! :) More blessings to come ahead… expect great things from God, the best it yet to come! ^^,

A Blessed and Magnificent New Year!!! :) :) :)

Sharing: A Touch of Nature….

Hello Everyone. It’s only a few hours before Christmas so I bet you’re really excited to have Noche Buenas with your family, loved ones and friends. Anyway, we’re kinda busy however I just wanna share nothing so special but a funny story that happened last Tuesday night. So here we go… :)

Sharing: A Touch of Nature… (When I fell in love with him)

So last Tuesday, I went home however there was electricity brown out from our place so I decided to go to my aunt’s house at Villa Teresa in Angeles City. We had dinner, some stories and stuff and while waiting for a few hours, I saw a puppy outside and it was a shitzu. The puppy is only 2 months, fresh from birth. So he’s very cute and huggable since everyone knows that I love pets and animals. Anyway, it was cold outside because of the cold breeze so I picked him up and I stayed at the living room, having him on lap and I just held him with my arms. (My gosh, OMG! he was so cute! An whenever he wiggle his cute little tail, my heart jumps and it makes me giggle and laugh. ehehe… :) ). So my cousin said that the puppy belongs to his friend, and it was a gift to his friend’s girlfriend and they were just waiting for him to pick up the puppy. I can’t believe I just fell in love with that puppy. I mean he was so young and he’s just a baby and they have no choice but to leave him outside because his owner might pick him up anytime. It was cold and I wanted to wrap him around my arms so he won’t feel the cold since he was just a baby and I know that he needs warmth.  :)

But anyway, we left and I was thinking about the puppy all night and till now, I can say that I still miss him so much… hehe… :) I can still remember when I picked him up and held him with my arms, Ah! he was just so cute!!! and lovely! :) I wish I had one.. hehe.. ^^ How wonderful that touch of nature is… But you know what? I really thank God because he made me like this. And it’s very exciting to know that you can really feel God’s love from those very simple things… :) Oh, btw, that puppy costs 12,000 php.. hehe… Though we can’t afford to buy that puppy, I just prayed and I hope he will be alright and he’ll be safe, secure and I just do hope his new owner will love hm and take care of him… Gee… I miss him a lot! haha :)

Growing Deeper With Christ

Current Mood: Tired and Very Sleeeppyyy… ^^

Finally! aha.. I have revived my previous blog. (http://rjkz.wordpress.com) When I started using WordPress I didn’t know how to create my own blog so when I tried to create one, and so I made that one. HOwever I didn’t know how to manage and fix it since its my first time. Oh well, When I tried pushing all the passwords I know I used so there, I have opened the blog.  It was actually a long time ago and I haven’t checked and updated it for such a long time. Thank God. :)

So, I’ll go ahead and update this one na. Ahe’

And btw, I have read this very beautiful verse in the Bible, In Psalm 131; “My heart is not proud, O LORD,  my eyes are not haughty;  I do not concern myself with great matters or things too wonderful for me. But I have stilled and quieted my soul;  like a weaned child with its mother, like a weaned child is my soul within me. O Israel, put your hope in the LORD both now and forevermore”. Amazing isn’t it? God reminded me of this since there were a lot of accomplishments within the ministry I am involved. The words and phrases that struck my heart is;

“I DO NOT CONCERN MY SELF WITH GREAT MATTERS OR THINGS TOO WONDERFUL FOR ME”.

These things may be BLESSINGS, ACCOMPLISHMENTS, FAVOR OF MEN AND ETC!… I thank God and praise him because even though I am a “busy bee” ahehe ^^ at work, family and within the ministry, He sustains me. I will never forget one leader who said; “WHEN GOD ORDAINS, HE SUSTAINS”. Even though she is no longer a part of the ministry I can still remember her encouragements and reminders to us before. I will never forget her because even though she has a lot of workload, I never heard even a single complain from her. She said; “SERVE GOD WHOLEHEARTEDLY, WE DON’T SERVE MEN, WE SERVE GOD!”. But I think she’s happy and she has a new life now. I don’t ever forget leaders who inspired and encouraged me. They serve as treasures in my spiritual journey. So, there… But for the meantime, Here’s a quick update. Will update soon just be patient coz I’ve been very busy

Theme for this month of October:

COMPASSION AND EVANGELISM

Reaching out to the lost souls, developing Christ-like compassion to others.

I mean REALLY AND SERIOUSLY BUSY. O_O Ever since the Ondoy tragedy happened, including Pepeng that added sorrow and pain to our fellow Filipino citizens, we had a lot of activities and local gatherings for the typhoon victims and we were assigned to collect all relief goods and donations from our members for those who were affected by the previous tragedies.  Yes, we experience a lot of blessings and provisions from God, but our Christian life is not just about being blessed but blessing others as well. Because in James 2:20/26 “Faith without works is dead”. Prayer is good, like what we have been doing since it happened, however God also commands us not just to give our prayers but also we must express giving by doing actions.

There were a lot of relief operations done by the JIL- I-CARE Ministry, but we didn’t had the chance to join the I-Care Ministry relief operations because there were so many workers and leaders who committed to join the operations. The distribution of relief goods was without media coverage. We don’t to mix politics in genuine giving. A lot of politicians today show “fake or false giving” It means they are giving and donating to these typhoon victims of their personal agenda and concerns. Of course, they would like to win eh! Ahe, And our Provincial Head Pastor, Rev. Alexander O. Garcia instructed us that only area pastors can join and we’ll just have to collect and gather our donations so they will be sent to our main church (JIL National) for distribution. However we are still in need of donations since they have already sent what we have gathered in our church. They were distributed to certain areas in Marikina, Cainta and Taytay Rizal per schedule. Hai, I hope I can join! haha. But like in the book of Romans, “All things work together for good for those who believes and trusts Him”.

Oh btw, praise God coz JIL Pampanga donated a lot to Ondoy and Pepeng victims as per report. Vehicle full of relief goods, clothes and other personal needs. It is because we have conducted specialized services to challenge and impart the passion to our members and they were done locally instead of celebrating our JIL National Anniversary. Our National Anniversary was cancelled because the EMB (Executive Management Board) Leadership has decided that instead of conducting the said anniversary, all expenses and transportation fees will be donated to the typhoon victims. Because we believe, that God will be more pleased when his children cares and serves his people through compassionate giving and sacrificial time and effort. To tell you honestly, when our pastor called an urgent meeting that time I haven’t slept and had rest for a week because of series of preparations for that specialized service for the typhoon victims. when I have time this week after I will have finished all reporting, I’ll update and post about the previous specialized service. I’ll just finish all reporting and then after, I’m free to do extra things during my free time.

But God is really amazing. There have been a lot of challenges so far and you don’t have any choice but to OBEY. ahe!

But I learned something when these things happened.

“IF GOD PUTS YOU UNDER PRESSURE, IT JUST MEANS HE IS STRETCHING OUT THINGS IN YOUR LIFE LIKE PATIENCE, ATTITUDE, CHARACTER, TIME, EFFORT, CREATIVITY LONG SUFFERING AND THE ABILITY TO HANDLE EVERY SITUATIONS IN LIFE. THIS IS GOD’S WAY TO MAKE US MATURE AND TO TEST OUR GENUINE COMPASSION AND SERVICE.”

Now what does compassion really means?

The word COMPASSION is :

  • a deep awareness of and sympathy for another’s suffering
  • the humane quality of understanding the suffering of others and wanting to do something about it
  • is a profound human emotion prompted by the pain of others. More vigorous than empathy, the feeling commonly gives rise to an active …
  • share the suffering of
  • showing or having compassion             There are a lot of things to define compassion. In the biblical times, It was Jesus who spread genuine compassion especially to his disciples. In Matthew 9:35-38:

“And Jesus went about all the cities and the villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of disease and all manner of sickness.  Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest indeed is plenteous, but the laborers are few.  Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he send forth laborers into his harvest”.

One of the reasons why I remained under the banner of the Jesus Is Lord Church (even though I left the church before) it is because our Spiritual Director Bishop Bro. Eduardo “Eddie” C. Villanueva has a great compassion to others (especially for our nation Philippines) and it created a “domino effect” down to the leaders, workers, and members of the church. And from there, one of the CORE VALUES that we uphold is “Love and Compassion for others” and I believe, it is God’s timing for us to experience and to have Genuine Compassion for others. In what way?

    • Ondoy and Pepeng typhoon tragedies

                - whenever I watch the news, the topics are all about these series of floods caused by Ondoy and Pepeng. Reporters from GMA and ABS-CBN Network said that a month of  heavy rain fall of one typhoon just ravaged Metro Manila and other places in the country for just 6 hours in one day, straight. And tell you, honestly. When I saw the pictures, videos, reports and live footage from the internet and television I can’t help but to cry and mourn for those people. During those times, September 26 and onwards my heart broke knowing that our fellow Filipino citizens suffered a lot because of these mighty typhoons. Imagine, like Richard Gomez a famous actor during his interview in Mel and Joey show said; “I realized that life can be gone in just one blink of an eye” And yes, it is true. God can take our lives, families and loved ones, our job/career, our possessions, etc! In just one instant. And he just did.

But it is very timing for us to show compassion to our nation. Bro. Eddie Villanueva keeps on reminding us that blessings are good, because they are from God. However in these times of calamities we must not enjoy receiving blessings but to share and extend help to others as well. Remember that God blessed us, because he wants us to become a blessing. And based from my perspective, what just happened gave us life lessons because is Metro Manila, people no longer have time for the Lord. They spend their lives mostly by working, travelling and since Manila has a lot of places where you can find leisure and pleasure, people spend most of their lives going to those places. When Ondoy came, reporters said that majority of the flood victims prayed and pled to God and they sought God’s hand to intervene and stop the flood. Especially Christine Reyes, she personally testified: “I never prayed that much in my entire life!” On the other hand, people became selfish and they lost compassion to others. So see how God works in our nation Philippines. He is not just cleansing the church, he is now moving mightily throughout our nation. We actually didn’t expect that even remote areas have been affected like Benguet, Pangasinan, Baguio, and even Pampanga(Candaba, Arayat, etc.)And like in the times of King David, there was a great compassionate shepherding.

    • Our Ministry Calling

(Having Genuine Compassion for the church God called us to be with)

                   - When God called me to serve him, It was always my mindset and my principle to be used in the JIL Ministry no matter what and till I reach the ages. I’m talking about being an ultimate adult someday with my own family, husband and kids. However as time passed by, my immaturities and irrational behaviors caused me to leave the church so many times (Like Jonah) and I eventually stopped serving God that time, coz those people whom I thought I trust and cared for me were the ones who brought me pain and grudges.  But when I left JIL Angeles before, I thought my life in serving God will end there because I was so  much hurt and disappointed that time. Honestly, It actually came to my mind to just transfer to other churches. I focused on my work, my personal life, I enjoyed the leisure going to malls, parks, etc! Just to cover up my loss and heartaches. But no matter how I try, I just can’t. It became even worst.

In the middle of February, I came back to the church. However even though I already visit and attend the Sunday Services, It seemed that everything is empty and my heart longed for God’s healing and restoration. From time to time, I was finally restored. I got back in worship-leading and I became a part of the Young Adult Ministry (YAM) and so, I was happy. Then I was merely surprised in July during a Provincial Gathering in JIL SF, Ptr. Arnel talked to us and right there and there, he informed me that I’m going to handle the Education Ministry. @_@! At first, I didn’t want to believe what he was saying and that time, for me it was a big joke. But I heard God’s small voice reminding me what the Holy Spirit kept on impressing in my heart and  he said; ” Be Ready!” The first three months were good, because of God’s grace. Every night and every single moment I always plead and ask for God’s grace and mercy. But these past few weeks, I realized that being a leader is not that easy. I experienced so many struggles, trials and challenges especially in  my personal life because unlike before, I still have time for myself but now, it almost different.

But one thing I was reminded is that genuine and total compassion starts from within. Compassion is a sign of humility because you take the initiative. And if you really love God and the ministry calling that is entrusted to you, desire total and complete compassion. You can’t continue to serve God in the ministry without compassion. One thing that I’ve learned before is, when I left the church the only thing that I’m focused with is myself. Of course, I got hurt. But what God teaches us in every situation is that whenever someone hurts us, instead of rehearsing our emotions and pain in our hearts take the initiative to forgive. That is a sign of compassion. I’ll give you an illustration: When crossing the road you don’t just walk straight ahead and if you get bumped, you blame the person driving the car. And of course, you get angry. But if you take a look on both sides, you can avoid what comes ahead or you can pause for a while and let it pass by. It’s just the same with us. Sometimes we already blame and get angry with people who have hurt us a lot. We forget to look on both sides, evaluate and check if there is something wrong why it happened and we also forget to ask our selves; “What might have gone wrong?”. We get too focused on our feelings and emotions.

    COMPASSION ALWAYS COMES WITH ACCOUNTABILITY

                     – Being accountable to ourselves, to others and to our families requires a lot of compassion. We can never feel the burden to help, to love and to move on without having compassion. An accountable person is different from being responsible. You can responsibly work, do your job, do what is due without being accountable but having accountability is more than a responsibility. I believe someone who is just responsible lacks compassion but being someone who is accountable has a lot of compassion. And being accountable before the sight of God means you show genuine and complete compassion to His Ministry.

    •  Our Families

                       - Are there any of you who’s families haven’t accepted Jesus as their Personal Saviour? Show genuine compassion by sharing Salvation to them. Making friends with others is good, However we must first have good relationships with our families. Joshua is a very good example of a man who had great compassion to his family. And when he served God, he desired that even his family will serve the Lord and will experience tremendous blessings from GOD.

    Joshua 24:25,

“But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord”

  •

    • Compassion to the lost (Evangelism)

                        - Last October 16, that was Thursday, we had our launching of  the Shepherding God’s Flock Training Seminar. It was a great event, and workers, leaders and lifegroup leaders went aware of their duties and responsibilities in the church. God’s presence was there, and everyone made a vow/commitment that no matter what, we will serve God.

Actually the JIL Church Ministries have one primary goal/vision: “TO BRING ALL PEOPLES TO THE KINGDOM OF THE LIVING GOD REGARDLESS OF RACE, COLOR, NATIONALITY, AND RELIGIOUS AFFILIATION THROUGH THE SAVING, HEALING, AND DELIVERING KNOWLEDGE OF THE LORD JESUS CHRIST”. And from there, certain trainings were launched especially the Shepherding the flock of God. I am so much blessed that I became a part of this church whose primary goal and compassion is to reach the lost souls and having them trained, discipled as future and dynamic leaders of the church.

Well, will have to save the best for last. God bless you all and stay tuned for the next posts. God bless the Philippines! *_*

(IN LINE WITH THE PREVIOUS POST ABOUT MY LOVELY FRIEND, KINDLY SEE THE CONTINUATION UNDER “SHARING”)

“But realize this, that in the last days perilous times will come. For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, revilers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, unloving, irreconcilable, malicious gossips, without self-control, brutal, haters of good, treacherous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, holding to a form of godliness, although they have denied its power; Avoid such men as these.”

    - 2 Timothy 3:1-5

For the past few days, we have been disturbed by the super typhoon “Ondoy”and our fellow citizens in Metro Manila and certain provinces have been affected that caused them to be homeless, and helpless. Even some famous actress have been affected, esp. “Christine Reyes”who lives at Provident Village and her house was washed out by the waters. It was completely hovered and now, even her fame and wealth can’t even save her from the disaster she has experienced. This is what the bible says about the last days of our stay here on earth; That there will be disasters and unpredictable circumstances of all around the globe. It has been evident by series of tragedies of nature and such sickness and disease known as “SWINE FLU” or the AH1N1 virus that had just previously spread throughout the country and different places. Even the government shows political conflicts and anomalies in which they tend to destroy one another using their respective powers and authority. Truly, we are living in the last times of this world. And I believe this is the right time to pray and ask God to completely heal our nation from its massive corruption, gambling, prostitution, poverty, hunger and distress of all Filipino people. It is time for a “Great Awakening and Great Revival” for our own home land. We must all unite in prayer and act in faith for our fellow Filipino citizens who have been greatly affected by the strong typhoon and that the government, the politicians and authorities who are just sitting on their comfort zones (Especially Madam President GMA) will wake up, will rise up and extend their hands for the needy and the homeless. Yes, the 2010 elections is coming near and all who are running for positions are raising funds for their campaign. But it they really have the heart of patriotism and passion for our nation, they will not hesitate to even offer their lives for the welfare of those who have been destructed by typhoon Ondoy.

But God is still in control. He is just shaking what need to be shaken. in Luke 21:11; ” and there will be great earthquakes, famines and pestilences in various places, and fearful events and great signs from heaven”. in NAS version; ” and there will be great earthquakes, and in various places plagues and famines; and there will be terrors and great signs from heaven.” This  is very evident through Word of God.  In Hebrews 12:26-29; At that time his voice shook the earth, but now he has promised, “Once more I will shake not only the earth but also the heavens.” The words “once more” indicate the removing of what can be shaken—that is, created things—so that what cannot be shaken may remain. Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, for our “God is a consuming fire. Truly that living in these terrible times is not gonna be easy without God’s hand intervening in our present situations. If you have not yet received Jesus Christ as your personal and your only Savior, ask God to forgive your sins and make this as a simple prayer:

Father God, I now understand what is happening at this present situation we are in.

I have been blind of your convictions and have been deaf when you were calling my name.

Forgive me, Lord for all of the sins I committed even for the sins I have done when I was a youth.

I pray that you would completely heal my heart and my soul and continue to release me from all of the bondage these sins have brought me in.

God, I recognize that I have not lived my life for You up until now.
I have been living for myself and that is wrong. I need You in my life; I want You in my life.
I acknowledge the completed work of Your Son Jesus Christ in giving His life for me on the cross at Calvary,
and I long to receive the forgiveness you have made freely available to me through this sacrifice.
Come into my life now, Lord.
Take up residence in my heart and be my king, my Lord, and my Savior.
From this day forward, I will no longer be controlled by sin, or the desire to please myself, but I will follow You all the days of my life
I will spend all eternity with your embrace.
And now, take full control of my life and the current situation I am in.
Helps us, O Lord. Intervene in our nation and may you guide me and protect me from terrors and destructions of this world.
Protect my life, my family, my friends and all my loved ones
In you hands, I entrust everything to you. I give everything to you

Those days are in Your hands. I ask this in Jesus’ precious and holy name.
      Amen.

“I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me”

    John 14:6

On behalf of the JIL Angeles Family and JIL Angeles Leadership, we would like to extend our prayers  to all  Filipino citizens who have been affected by the strong typhoon Ondoy.

We, as a family are uniting in prayer, in faith and in fasting to ask God to intervene in our present situation throughout the country that he may comfort those who have been homeless, helpless and that he will protect those who have been lost from their families. We pray that God will lead those families together who have been separated by the flood and that the rescuers may find all lost victims bodies especially in Pasig River Side, Marikina, Provident Village and all affected areas of Metro Manila and other Provinces. We pray that the families who lost their loves ones  due to the tragedy of landslides will be comforted by God’s love and protection. We pray that all goverment officials will extend their help for those who are in need of food, shelter and clothing especially President Glora Macapagal  Arroyo will get out of her comfort zone and will release funds for those who have been affected and are suffering in hunger and great suffering. The JIL I-Care Ministry is currently taking its action by extending help to others, giving relief goods, food and extra clothing for the people even without media coverage. We pray that God will bring good weather to our nation and that all who have been affected will be restored. Especially hospitals, health centers, schools, ect. And we pray and intercede that no more families will be separated and no more Filipinos will be affected and will be lost because of the typhoon. That no more will die and will lost its soul without accepting Jesus as their personal Saviour. We pray that those families who’s loved ones are working across the country will be guided and protected by teh Holy Spirit, and that God will comfort them and no disasters and accidents will happen in their lives, especially their families. We pray that this will all be over.

God is still on control. God bless our nation Philippines! and God Bless all Filipino People.

Hi Friend! and hello to all… been very busy this past few days and here we are, preparing for our upcoming “JIL National Anniversary Celebration”. It’s so exiting coz this will be the first time that I will attend the anniversary in which Bro. Eddie is there! And he will proclaim his candidacy. Well I’m with my family, co-workers and co-leaders and friends of course! and we will travel here from Angeles City to Luneta Grandstand to witness our National Anniversay on October 04, 2009.

However I want to highlight someone in this post, and she was my friend within the church. (The one I was talking about in the previous post). I just want to grab this opportunity to thank her being a blessing to me. Her name is Dialyn “Lyn” Diza. She’s one of my closest friends in the church and I am really blessed how God moves in her life because inspite of the persecutions she is experiencing and I never saw her letting go of the faithfulness and commitment to the Lord. That’s why she is being blessed by God and she can even lead worship for the whole Sunday by God’s grace. She’s very humble, sweet, funny, cute and I can see her as a matured Christian. I’ll be posting her pictures very soon so just stay tuned for the update! I just don’t have time to take pictures coz I don’t have my digi-camera with me.

Having a friend like her is just so wonderful coz you know, God surrounds you with good people whom you can grow in faith with. Like David and Johnathan, they were just friends but they treated each other as brothers and they even loved each other more than themselves. That’s why when Johnathan died, he kept on yelling; “Brother!, brother!”. And take note; Johnathan loved David more than his father, Saul and he even defended David from him. It’s such a great story about friendship and brotherhood. Very inspiring and amazing. And so, I really like the way God deals with my friend “Lyn” and I truly believe that God will raise her up as one of the future anointed and dynamic leaders and preachers in JIL Angeles Church. Actually, she doesn’t know that I am praying for her to be the head of the WAM ministry because her leadership potentials has increased and has raised to a higher level. So kudos! for my friend “Lyn” two thumbs up ^^

Imagine the world without friends, what would this world may be?

Friends are wonderful people we can mingle and share our life with. Treasure them and let God bless you with lots of these wonderful people!

And above all,  Jesus has called us ”Friends” when he died on the cross of Calvary… Godbless you all!

    A Friend…

Oh my, it was a Sunday however I missed to attend the morning, young adult and youth service in the church coz I had no chance but to work due to an emergency call from our boss… hmp! Well, that’s ok. That’s part of life.. hehehe :) you can’t call it work if you’re not required to come on a day they required you to drop in right? Work is work. It’s not a play time or a past time. Well we must face it. Its our “bread and butter” and what we do for living. And besides, its part of our life balance. We really can’t eliminate these things in life but we have the ability to handle the situations we’re in. We may not control everything, but we can make a difference by how and what our response may be. Hmmm.. oh! enough of introductions, lol the thing is, I just want to share a close friend of mine who will be joining me in this blog and she’s one of my co-worker and co-leader within the church. But I consider her more matured and more superior than me coz I see how God works in her life and how she takes every challenge in life positively. Unlike me, I’m a pessimist. ahe’ But God will change me. It is not God’s will for us to be immature all the time.

Btw, her name is Lyn (Nickname) Full name is Dialyn Diza. I call her ate lyn before coz she’s older than me even when I was still a youth. But when certain changes and transitions happened within the church, I began to call her “friend”.

(I really dunno how it started. hehe :) It just happened)

She’s cute funny, and kind.I’ll post some pictures of her next time so that you’ll see how honest I am in introducing her. She will be posting her testimonies and articles, encouragements, etc.  in this blog.  You know it’s funny bcoz when we had our first concert they made a video of her with “Kuya Mark” A.K.A John Lloyd of  JIL Angeles Church. In that video, they pretended to be lovers and eventually, a “Happily Ever After Story”. Then all the elders, members  and workers of the church started teasing them and confessing words that they will be unitied in marriage someday. All of us knows that there is power in confession! And it shall come to pass.. hehehe :)

(Friend don’t get mad ah, face it. You two are destined for each other ahe)

:) Mark has a gf, however there are certain qualifications of God for a partner in life and  he/ she must be a believer of God.

Anyways, May utang ako sa friend ko so next Sunday,  whole day me mag worship lead… ehe.. :) But God is good. He’s so good all the time. It ’s very refreshing when you know that inspite of all life’s stress, God gives us comfort and peace. And with a friend like her, It’s even more refreshing.

    In Ecclesiastes 4:9-12:

    Two are better than one,
because they have a good return for their labor:

        10 If they fall down,
they can help each other up.
           But pity those who fall
and have no one to help them up!

11 Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm.
But how can one keep warm alone?

12 Though one may be overpowered,
           two can defend themselves.
A cord of three strands is not quickly broken

So please stay tuned for more details and as she introduces herself to you..

    Hope you enjoyed your day….

Be safe and be warm because in God’s presence there is joy!..

    God Bless you all

Do you feel like giving up?

            Ahhhhh… Home at last….

It was really a great weekend. And here I am, off from work.

A 2 day off at last! :) But what’s next? hmm.. Oh well, I wish I could rest this day with just for a minute.

    • just sharing my thoughts with you….

It was a weekend with alot of challenges and personal things to deal in my life. Well at home and in the church, no one knows that I feel lonely and discouraged. And usually, I feel stress. I usually feel this way coz after doing my responsibilities within the church, I go straight to work. Then doing some stuff in my family is not an easy job coz I’m typically the one whose winning the “bread n butter”. My parents have big expectations to me, especially my dad. That’s why whenever I commit mistakes, or whenver I can’t seem to please them, they take it too heavy. It’s like a big deal to them and it’s like; “I’m not allowed to commit mistakes AT ALL”. I seldom think like I wanna give up. I wanna run away from everyone and find a place that the only person you can find is me, alone. Away from problems, disappointments, discouragements, stress, pains, hurts, etc. I remember the story of Jabez, he was born to feel pain. (Jabez means pain and sorrow)But inspite of that, he was greatly blessed. No wonder why some pastors, leaders, workers and other Christians within the church choose to temporarily stay focused with their personal lives it is because of Unbalanced Lifestyle. It’s the reality and this is the truth. I personally experience this. But Thank God, he reminded me that I’m being too pessimistic again. I was always a pessimist. Although I like challenges, sometimes it comes to a point that everything in my life, I could no longer bear. This is one attitude that I want to remove in my life. I want to be an optimistic person, however when challenges and when troubles come, Oh! here we are again, driven by emotions and fear.

I can still remember the day when God raised me up as one of the leaders of the church. I wanted to say “No” to our pastor. Because I know myself. I know who I am and what weaknesses I have. I couldn’t say no that time coz I don’t want to miss the opportunity that God is giving me a 2nd chance after I left the ministry few months and years ago. And now I know, being a leader is not an easy task. Well if you are to ask me, I wanna grow in maturity first. I want to bring back the day that I was appointed as a leader. And I wanna tell our pastor, “No, pastor. I believe this is not the right time”…. Well I wish I could do that… But I can’t!  Like what the Bible says; “There is always a reason and a time for everything”. So I’m gonna move forward and face the challenges and fears that I have. Coz i know God has a purpose for this why its happening.

    • Now the question is, Do you feel like giving up?

The answer is Yes. I feel like giving up… But what makes me still standing?

It’s all because of God’s grace and mercy. Thank God, he reminded me of such. Last Thusday, during the CORE Meeting, our pastor exhorted the same message in us. The exact title is;  “Do you feel like giving up”? So there. I was reminded of God’s grace not to give up the challenge. We must stay close to God and do extraordinary things by just being “fully surrendered” to his will. I’m actually learning and growing day by day with God. I remember when I feel like at times he has forsaken me? Oh no. God will never leave us nor forsake us. That is his promise in Hebrews 13:5

“forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead,

I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus”.

    - Philippians 3:13-14
